How to Build a Closet
So, you want to build a closet? If you want to actually add a closet onto a room you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you. But if your idea of building a closet is putting some shelves into that current dead space in your house, then it’s not too bad.
How to build a closet from scratch
What do you mean that your house has no closet space? Isn’t that tiny 2×2 foot space off of the living enough for all of your worldly possessions? If it was good enough for your grandparents, then dagnabbit, it should be good enough for you as well. You’re just far too worldly and vain. Three pairs of shoes?! Seriously, you can only wear one pair at a time.
Fortunately there is an easy solution to building a closet that doesn’t require any building. All you need to do is find a house with an extra room. Throw some shelves up and maybe a rack or two. Presto! You’ve got an instant walk in closet. Anything more complicated than that would require saws and hammers and stuff and let’s face it, you’re just going to hurt yourself with those anyway.
How to build a closet from a closet
So, you already have a closet space, you just don’t know what to do with it. Have you tried hanging your clothes in there? Ok, you have. Well, what more do you want from a closet anyway? Fine, I’m not being very helpful. But this was never intended to be helpful in the first place so I don’t know what you expect aside from hopefully a good laugh.
If you seriously want your closet to do more than hang stuff, it’s going to cost you. And it’s going to cost you a surprisingly large amount. You can put a board over your hanging bar to create a shelf. This isn’t too hard. But stupid boards are even expensive if you have more than a few feet to cover. And then you’ll need brackets to support the shelf. Because if you plan on putting anything on the closet shelf it will weigh something and that weight will break the board.
Your other option is to get wire racks. These are even more expensive and do the same thing as a wooden shelf. So, it’s really all about look. Do you want to spend the extra money to get a more sophisticated look in a tiny space that nobody is ever going to see?
After your regular shelves you can get some proprietary items like shoe shelves and tie racks. Of course these are really reserved for the ultra elite who own more than three pairs of shoes or three ties anyway. Having a special rack for two ties is hardly worth the investment unless of course you’re thinking about the later resale value of the house. Market research has shown that houses that come with their own tie rack sell for $10-15 more than houses that do not. And after all, isn’t this the real reason that you want to know how to build a closet. In the end, it’s all about the resale value.
